Why a Blog on Baseball Technology

So why do a blog on baseball technology?

Isn’t this a well covered topic? Well, not really. SportTechie does annual online events on the topic, but beyond this it quickly fragments into vendor PR, magazine articles (Baseball America, Forbes, etc…) and an occasional story on MLB or ESPN.

What is missing is a perspective that cuts across the sport, from in-game tech to player development, education, administration, analytics and fan engagement. Some technologies are for players, others for coaches and other for management/owners. Some technologies require expensive hardware, while others are just pure data and software. On the surface, it is very confusing and hard to keep up with (which is one reason some in the industry are still pretending it doesn’t exist).

The goal of Diamond Techie is to provide this broad perspective in simple business language, for players, coaches, player development staff, trainers, managers and others — including fans and parents, who ultimately pay for everything.

It is important for participants in the baseball marketplace to understand the overall trends and impacts of technologies. It is making players better, creating big turnover in coaching and player development, changing how players are assessed and recruiting and ultimately making the game more enjoyable to fans. It is also creating new business opportunities in a multi-billion dollar global market.
